The slowdown in the property market has had some unexpected side-effects. One of them is that landlords have suddenly become tenants and some of the more savvy investors have become landlords, which means that they have to become familiar with the provisions of the Rental Housing Act.
Too many properties are being repossessed because the owners are ignorant of their rights, said Vivien Marks, a member of the Rental Housing Tribunal.
Ms Marks, who owns the Assessment and Training Centre for Estate Agents in Pinelands was general manager of the Institute of Estate Agents for many years until she left in 2007.
She has always been interested in the rental aspects of property and started giving seminars for landlords when she realized that many people who bought property did not know enough about the Act and its ramifications…
